My family and I are absolutely crushed to an extreme degree because we had to put Elmo our dog to sleep. It was Saturday 11-29-08. He had stopped eating about a week before, but he didn't seem right for about a month before that, like he ate less and didn't want to walk as far. The vet did an x-ray and found his kidneys were very enlarged and blood tests confirmed his kidneys had shut down. An ultrasound showed he had cancer in the kidneys and they were pressing on his bowel causing him to not be able to go to the bathroom. They said if we did absolutely nothing, he probably would only have weeks left and the vet said it is a painful way to go, so the humane thing to do was to euthanize him. It was so sudden and unexpected. He was only 11 years old and we've had him for over 10 years. It's like losing a family member. Someone who doesn't have a dog or an animal can't understand what it's like. So we went to the vet on that Saturday morning, my mom called us up and said we better get down there. We went into one of the rooms, and when he saw us, his tail wagged. He was just lying on a big pillow and they asked us if we wanted to be there when they did it and we stayed. The vet came in and gave him something. He just drifted off to sleep and never woke up, he wasn't in pain and he looked so peaceful. We are going to miss him so much. My little buddy is gone. Right now we just need to keep busy in the truth to keep our mind off of it.
